Following golfer Rory McIlroy’s withdrawal from the Olympics in Rio, Dr Peter Barlow was asked to make a media comment to Agence France Presse (AFP). The statement made was;
“While the majority of people who contract Zika virus will have mild or no symptoms, the long term effects of Zika infection are still poorly understood. It is completely understandable that an elite athlete such as Rory McIlroy is putting his own and his family’s health first in this instance, particularly if he has plans to start a family in the near future”
The comments were published in several media outlets including Yahoo News.
